Music Censorship Free Essays

Kevin Ung Professor Vazquez English 101 October 9, 2007 Music Censorship I enjoy and love music very much. I feel that music artists should have the right to freely express their work and I feel that I should argue about the censorship attacks on these artists. I’m tired of listening to a good song on the radio with some of the words censored. We will write a custom essay sample on Music Censorship or any similar topic only for you Order Now It ruins the song and I can’t stand it. Some people think that rap is a bad influence and causes the young to behave badly. But I think all this censoring has something to do with racism because it is mostly black people singing the songs. The first website list the good side and bad side of rap censorship. I think half of this site is pretty good to use for my paper. The second website has a lot of information for my readers but the author has no definite side on the issue and can’t be used to persuade my readers. The last two websites are essays about censorship and wouldn’t be good sources of information for my readers because some of the sources might not be trustable. We must stop the censoring of art and let the artists freely express their music because everyone deserves to express him or herself the way they want. â€Å"Gangsta Rap, Censorship of: Debatabase – Debate Topics and Debate Motions† http://www. idebate. org/debatabase/topic_details. php? topicID=263 This website is sponsored by IDEA (International Debate Education Association). It is an independent membership organization. I think this website is appropriate for college level argument research essay because it provides information on both sides of an issue. This site contains many debates on almost any issue. It lists the pros and cons on how rap music doesn’t actually encourage some listeners to behave in a certain way. Since this website shows both sides of the issue, it can help me or hurt me in convincing my readers. â€Å"Rap, Rock, and Censorship†, http://www. cas. sc. edu/socy/faculty/deflem/zzcens97. htm   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This page’s sponsor is by a man named Mathieu Deflem. The sponsor is appropriate because he is an associate professor of sociology at University of South Carolina. He has done a lot of research on the issue with many sources and seems reliable. Some of the information on this page is helpful for my readers to understand the issue. He writes about the history and arguments of censorship of popular music. He writes about the legal principles, the law, and mainly the protection of the First Amendment. This site will just be a good information page on understanding the history of the fight on music censorship. Some of the facts are useful for my research but the author doesn’t pick one side of the issue. Censorship of rap music essays†,. html This website is an essay database that requires you to buy membership to fully view essays that other students turned in. I couldn’t find any information on sponsors. I don’t think this site is appropriate for college level argument research essay because you can’t trust the information on these essays. This site is mainly for people to buy the essays and then plagiarize the work. Much of the information I can find on this page is an introduction to censorship of rap.It starts off talking about how rap music is made by rap artists that grew up with a tough childhood. They work on music and become successful. They are perfect role models showing everyone that anyone in that kind of situation can be successful. The essay ends there and you have to pay to see the rest. This paper is of no use to my readers and I because I want to use trustable facts from educated people and not just some unknown author. â€Å"Rap and Censorship†,. php This website seems to be another essay paper database.I don’t think this site is appropriate for reasons mention above. But this site is a little better because I can actually view the whole essay plus the sources the person used. This makes the paper more reliable. This paper mostly shows the beginnings of how rap got started and the troubles of censoring it went through. The writer does seem to be against censorship but this paper is mainly just facts for the reader and not that much persuasive. I would recommend my readers to read this for the freedom issues the write discusses about. ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) would be appropriate for my readers to contact. ACLU is a political organization that is nonprofit and nonpartisan. They have many civil liberties members and supporters. They protect individual rights, your First Amendment rights, your right to equal protection under the law, etc. Censorship goes against your freedom of speech and so they try and protect that from music artists who are having their work censored. The strongest piece of information I have discovered from this aspect of my research came from reading the paper on the second website.I read about how PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) claimed that popular music was responsible for influencing the young like increase of rape, crime, suicide, etc. This organization goes against everything I’m fighting for and is the main problem in this issue. I would absolutely not use any of their information for my argument research paper.Works Cited â€Å"Censorship of Rap Music. † MegaEssays. Mega Essays LLC. 8 Oct. 2007 . htmlDeflem, Mathieu. Out of 60 articles from the music trade magazines, â€Å"Billboard† and â€Å"Rolling Stone,† 77 instances of censorship were recorded and analyzed. The categories for evaluation were the year of citation, music style, and reason for censorship. We will write a custom essay sample on Music Censorship or any similar topic only for you Order Now Nineteen ninety was the year with the highest number of journal articles (21) covering music censorship. Rap (48%) and rock (44. 2%) music accounted for a large portion of the total censored recordings and the majority of recordings were censored because of lyrics seen as explicit, profane, obscene or vulgar. In addition, five rock recordings were censored because of objectionable artwork on or inside the covers. Recordings were also censored because of opposition to a view the artist expressed. Two tables depict the years of citation and the reasons for censorship, each according to music styles. (Anthony K. S 1995) Music has historically been, and continues to be, censored in an attempt to enforce morality. It’s not a coincidence that music censorship in America began to accelerate during the 1950s, when traditional and conservative values began to unravel. At the time, order, strict obedience to authority, and conservative values were part of the accepted mindset. (Lambordi, Victor 1991) With the advent of rock ‘n’ roll, however, young America began to loosen attitudes on issues relating to morality. Technology also played an important part in shaping the moral power struggle in the 1950s. Lambordi, Victor 1991) For example, the 1920s era saw similar complaints against flappers and jazz musicians; however, radio wasn’t as dominant at that time. In the 1950s, radio provided access to new types of music that challenged traditional morality and created the dynamics for music censorship. (Lambordi, Victor 1991) In 1956, Elvis may have been known as â€Å"the king or roc k and roll,† but he was very controversial in his performances and mannerisms in the 1950’s. Ray Charles would also have a very controversial history when it comes to releasing music. Being one of the first artists to urn gospel music to RB made him his music censored and many of the southern states back in December of 1954. A lot of the artists of the 1950s paved the way in the starting of music censorship. Moral authorities aim to determine what behavior is â€Å"acceptable† for individuals and for society. Drugs, violence, and especially sex are topics moral authorities attempt to regulate. The end of the 1950s witnessed many members of society, particularly young adults and teens begin expressing new attitudes about these topics: Sex and drugs were no longer hidden and secretive acts, but something to be exposed and celebrated. This shift in outlook began breaking down the traditional moral order in many aspects of society especially music. Race may seem a strange factor in music censorship, but it has played a significant role. In particular, the 1950s and early 1960s saw a new genre of music — rhythm and blues — emerge onto the national music landscape. (Nuzum, Eric 1989) RB music included freely expressed sexual desires, clear drug references, and other features that were not as prevalent in other forms of popular music. RB was – and still is—dominated by black musicians and traditionally was enjoyed mainly by black audiences. Nuzum, Eric 1989) When its audience expanded to include mainstream white youths and young adults, this was a problem for many older whites who considered RB music as a threat that corrupted young people and promoted immoral behavior. (Nuzum, Eric 1989) This phenomenon prompted moral authorities to take action. In 1955, for example, Houston’s Juven ile Delinquency and Crime Commission banned more than 30 songs – many by black artists. A Chicago radio station promised to censor â€Å"any controversial music, especially RB,† after receiving letters from angry listeners. Sparrow, Kelly 2009) Racially motivated music censorship is not a practice limited to the past. More recent cases involve MTV refusing to air videos from many black artists in the infancy of the network. In 1983, during a live interview, David Bowie suddenly asked, â€Å"Why are there practically no black artists on the network? † (â€Å"Why it Took MTV So Long†2006) Michael Jackson’s â€Å"Billie Jean† from the album Thriller, released in 1983, is credited with being the first black video aired on MTV in heavy rotation. â€Å"Why it Took MTV So Long† 2006) The year with the highest number of cited recordings was 1990, and the majority of these recordings were rock music. In the following years, almost all of the c ensored recordings were rap music. (Anthony K. S. 1995) â€Å"The largest number of recordings, mostly rap music, were censored either because they were labeled â€Å"explicit† or because they were profane, obscene, or vulgar in language. (Anthony K. S. 1995) The argument can be made that racial motivations also played a large role in the FBI’s 1989 letter to the rap group N. W. A. (Nuzum, Eric 1989) The F. B. I. s intent was to notify the rap group that their song â€Å"F*** Tha Police† wasn’t appreciated by the government. N. W. A. supporters argue the group was only expressing the frustrations of inner-city blacks and holding a mirror to their everyday reality. While no legal action took place, the example helps give context to the pressures behind government and music censorship. It is my personal believe that music censorship to some may go against their freedom of speech but to me I believe it is necessary for those individual artist who do feel th at they have limits and have to be politically correct. A lot of kids look up to those rappers and rock stars as role models and music censorship helps the artist become that good role model. In conclusion, I believe music censorship is a very important part in our community and should always remain. Music censorship may stem from race, fear, and morality just to name a few sources of censorship. I believe even though music censorship didn’t always start off by just means in the past doesn’t mean it isn’t just in the present. References: retrieved from AIU virtual library * Anthony, K. S. Me Essays (1120 words) - English-language Films, Chris Matthews

Me In the world of politics, nothing is of absolute guarantee and nothing is everlasting. In politics, "wars" come and go but the "soldiers" stay forever and to get ahead, one must always be ready to be a team player and must always not forget old allies and the people that worked to get you to where you have gotten. Chris Matthews reflects this sentimental in his book "Hardball" as he shares his political experiences and knowledge. In his book, he shares three lessons that can help anyone rise within the political realm and they are "all politics is local," "Dance with the one that bring ya," and "it's not who you know, it's who you get to know." Hardball by Chris Matthews is an interpretation of what many know as hard-politics. The book describes the skill of playing the game in Washington and how to be successful at it. The book is a guide that teaches a series of maxims that would be in favor of politicians to learn in order to be successful. The different tactics provided in the book hold a lot of knowledge that would make the life of anyone following these strategies much easier when trying to get ahead in life. Matthews describes a countless number of examples of successful politicians that rose to the top. Those politicians are the ones who learned how to play hardball in Washington. To be a team player and to make allies, one must first get into a team. In politics, the key advantage is knowing the people that are already in positions of power or getting to know people that have "connections." Thus Chris Matthews brings to the first key step for a successful political career and that is to get to know people and find friends. The easiest example is the rapid success of Lyndon Baines Johnson. When LBJ was staying at the Dodge Hotel, he took four showers, brushed his teeth five times and he did this with a pain-staking precision, planning to "run into" as many congressional secretaries as possible. LBJ knew that to rise in bureaucratic ranks, gaining allies and contacts was one big key factor in politics. Thus within three months of arriving in Washington, he got elected to the position of the speaker for the organization of all house staff assistants. With this secret power of getting to know people, LBJ used it well especially since he joined the senate. Within three years of joining the senate as a "nobody," he became the top Democratic leader. Thus LBJ was able to get ahead in the game of politics, first when he got into the "Washington Politics" by getting into contact with people in the Dodge hotel and then again to get himself elected onto the "little congress" and once again LBJ used his "skills" to get to know people in the senator and thus using that to his advan tage during his presidency. Thomas O'Neil said that when people come to see you, do not ignore their problems, but pay attention to what they have to say to you because it is important to them. Otherwise they would have never come to you. Thus dealing with people on this individual basis, as a politician would of the voters, can be of great advantage if you can use it properly. Chris Matthews says that this is what local politics mean and that is a rule in the world of politics. To get ahead, you have to know this rule, that "all politics is local." To even farther your career, you must show that you can be loyal to your locals back home as well as to your associates, friends, party members and supporters. No one will trust a traitor in the world of politics and even the voters will not respect them. A important example of this is Ronald Reagan who showed his great strength in loyalty by sticking to the conservative side even though the "middle of the road" side showed to be more promising in the political spectrum. Sometimes to win, you have to stick to your guns no matter what the cost may seem to you, because you can win the hearts of the people and your

Last Mohican essays

Last Mohican essays The book The Last of the Mohicans is nothing more than a piece of literature defining the difficulties of multiculturalism in its respective time period. The book, not to be analyzed too deeply, is a romanticized version of white American stereotypes. The Last of the Mohicans is a romantic novel because it is consistent with the four tenets of romanticism. First of all, a few of the characters in the book, mainly Cora and Uncas, are portrayed as being dark and mysterious, and, in many ways, superior to the masses. Cora's description in the book is a dark-haired woman with deep-toned complexion and beautiful appearance. Throughout the book she displays an array of emotions and she takes no hesitation in expressing them. This is one of the tenets imagination and feelings being superior to reason and thought. The thought and reason represents what others? opinions are, and the feelings (though not necessarily imagination) represents Cora's point of view, and willingness to share that view. Uncas is another reason why I think that this book is a romantic novel. He is an Indian and also very untamed, which goes along with the second tenet of romanticism primitiveness, and the dark and mysterious, are attractive. I think that t his tenet also goes along with the setting the wilderness of the woods. The setting itself is very romantic, in that sense. The mixture of those two figures and the setting are three of the reasons I think that The Last of the Mohicans is a romantic novel. Romantic stories are exaggerated and unrealisitic. For instance, Hawkeye running through the woods shooting people perfectly from far away, in the dark! Nature is controlled, the wind blows at the "perfect time," the sun has "perfect timing," it rains at the exact moment that it should. Most movies are like that. Romantics would argue that the invented and imagined characters and symbols create allegories that h ...

Battle of Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War

Battle of Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War The climatic naval battle of the Spanish-American War, the Battle of Santiago de Cuba resulted in a decisive victory for the US Navy and the complete destruction of the Spanish squadron. Anchored in Santiago harbor in southern Cuba, Spanish Admiral Pascual Cerveras six ships found themselves blockaded by the US Navy in the late spring of 1898. With the advance of American forces ashore, Cerveras position became untenable and on July 3 he attempted to escape with his squadron. Cervera was soon intercepted by American battleships and cruisers under Rear Admiral William T. Sampson and Commodore William S. Schley. In a running battle, the superior American firepower reduced Cerveras ships to burning wrecks. The loss of Cerveras squadron effectively cut off Spanish forces in Cuba. Situation Prior to July 3 Following sinking of USS Maine and the outbreak of war between Spain and the United States on April 25, 1898, the Spanish government dispatched a fleet under Admiral Pascual Cervera to defend Cuba. Though Cervera was against such a move, preferring to engage the Americans near the Canary Islands, he obeyed and after evading the US Navy arrived at Santiago de Cuba in late May. On May 29, Cerveras fleet was spotted in the harbor by Commodore Winfield S. Schleys Flying Squadron. Two days later, Rear Admiral William T. Sampson arrived with the US North Atlantic Squadron and after taking overall command began a blockade of the harbor. Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, USN. In June, his situation became more tenuous following the landing of American troops up the coast at Guantnamo Bay. As the days passed, Cervera waited for inclement weather to scatter the blockade so that he could escape the harbor. Following the American victories at El Caney and San Juan Hill on July 1, the admiral concluded that he would have to fight his way out before the city fell. He decided to wait until 9:00 AM on Sunday July 3, hoping to catch the American fleet while it conducting church services (Map). Spanish Navy armored cruisers Cristà ³bal Colà ³n (left) and Vizcaya. US Naval History and Heritage Command The Fleets Meet On the morning of July 3, as Cervera was preparing to break out, Adm. Sampson pulled his flagship, the armored cruiser USS New York, out of line to meet with ground commanders at Siboney leaving Schley in command. The blockade was further weakened by the departure of the battleship USS Massachusetts which had retired to coal. Emerging from Santiago Bay at 9:45, Cerveras four armored cruisers steered southwest, while his two torpedo boats turned southeast. Aboard the armored cruiser USS Brooklyn, Schley signaled the four battleships still on the blockade to intercept. A Running Fight Cervera began the fight from his flagship, Infanta Maria Teresa, by opening fire on the approaching Brooklyn. Schley led the American fleet towards the enemy with the battleships Texas, Indiana, Iowa, and Oregon in line behind. As the Spaniards steamed by, Iowa hit Maria Teresa with two 12 shells. Not wishing to expose his fleet to fire from the entire American line, Cervera turned his flagship to cover their withdrawal and directly engaged Brooklyn. Taken under heavy fire by Schleys ship, Maria Teresa began to burn and Cervera ordered it run aground. The remainder of Cerveras fleet raced for open water but was slowed by inferior coal and fouled bottoms. As the American battleships bore down, Iowa opened fire on Almirante Oquendo, ultimately causing a boiler explosion that forced the crew to scuttle the ship. The two Spanish torpedo boats, Furor and Pluton, were put out of action by fire from Iowa, Indiana, and the returning New York, with one sinking and the other running aground before exploding. End of Vizcaya At the head of the line, Brooklyn engaged the armored cruiser Vizcaya in an hour-long duel at approximately 1,200 yards. Despite firing over three hundred rounds, Vizcaya failed to inflict significant damage on its adversary. Subsequent studies have suggested that as much as eighty-five percent of the Spanish ammunition used during the battle may have been defective. In response, Brooklyn bludgeoned Vizcaya and was joined by Texas. Moving closer, Brooklyn struck Vizcaya with an 8 shell that caused an explosion setting the ship on fire. Turning for shore, Vizcaya ran aground where the ship continued to burn. Oregon Runs Down Cristobal Colon After more than an hours fighting, Schleys fleet had destroyed all but one of Cerveras ships. The survivor, the new armored cruiser Cristobal Colon, continued fleeing along the coast. Recently purchased, the Spanish Navy did not have time to install the ships primary armament of 10 guns before sailing. Slowed due to engine trouble, Brooklyn was unable to catch the retreating cruiser. This allowed the battleship Oregon, which had recently completed a remarkable voyage from San Francisco in the wars early days, to move forward. Following an hour-long chase Oregon opened fire and forced Colon to run aground. USS Oregon (BB-3). US Naval History and Heritage Command Aftermath The Battle of Santiago de Cuba marked the end of large-scale naval operations in the Spanish-American War. In course of the fighting, Sampson and Schleys fleet lost a miraculous 1 killed (Yeoman George H. Ellis, USS Brooklyn) and 10 wounded. Cervera lost all six of his ships, as well as 323 killed and 151 wounded. In addition, approximately 70 officers, including the admiral, and 1,500 men were taken prisoner. With the Spanish Navy unwilling to risk any additional ships in Cuban waters, the islands garrison was effectively cut off, ultimately dooming them to surrender.

Reading Visual Arguments Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Reading Visual Arguments - Assignment Example mentative essays contain a lot of thoughts, evidence, and opinions that cannot simply be summed up in the confines of a picture or other visual design. Even though the author is convinced that were are quickly relying more on images than we do the printed word, he seems to be unaware of the meaning that can be taken away if images replace words in an argument. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but in the case of an argumentative essay, these are the words that do not matter, and will not help the arguer properly make their point. Argumentative essays set out to make and prove a point or opinion through the use of evidence other supporting arguments, as well as a counterargument so that the reader may understand what the argument consists of. If visual materials were to replace even a small portion of writing, the reader will end up missing out on a vital point, crucial evidence, or the closing thoughts and statements. As aforementioned, images have the possibility of increasing the purpose or the points of written text, though when it comes to argumentative essays, the text should be what outshines the images. Only so much can be explained by an image, and when it comes to an argumentative essay, very few things can actually be conveyed, such as the concluding idea, a graphic of one of the points, or a chart showing how many people agree or disagree with a certain position. When an image is put in place of text, the reader only sees what is within the picture. They will be unaware of the little details and the finer points behind those images unless the writer explains them - using text. The words in an argumentative essay are what really and thoroughly explain every aspect of the argument, helping the reader to understand and avoid confusion as they try to grasp what the argument is
